Serie A Returns: The Title Race, Champions League Battle, Relegation Fight & Big Games to Look Forward to

Image
When Serie A returns on June 20, over three months will have passed since we were treated to the delights of Italian football. And the hiatus couldn’t have come at a worse time. More often than not in recent years, Juventus have had the title sewn up by now - but that couldn’t be further from the truth this season; the title race is open, Champions League football is up for grabs, the relegation battle is going down to the wire. Absolutely nothing has been rubber stamped yet, meaning everything is up for grabs as we enter the home straight. Let’s take a look at the league’s current standings and where the battles at both ends of the table will be won and lost. The Title Race Olympique Lyon v Juventus - UEFA Champions League Round of 16: First Leg What had been a three-horse race has now been narrowed down to just two thanks to Inter’s collapse prior to the postponement of the league. Antonio Conte’s men had been hot on the heels of Lazio and Juventus, however, having been beaten away f...

AC Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimović is reported to have hobbled away from AC Milan training after suffering an Achilles injury which could put his career in jeopardy. The 38-year-old resumed training with Milan on 8 May following a two-month hiatus due to the coronavirus outbreak. AC Milan v Genoa CFC - Serie A With the restart date for  Serie A  yet to be confirmed, it appears highly unlikely the Swedish talisman will take any further part in Milan’s season, with reports suggesting he departed the training session with a ‘long face’ following the injury. “Today, Ibra stopped during a training match at the end of the session,”  Sky Sports Italia  reported. “After a finish, he puts his weight on the foot and feels something in his calf, the one that he struggled with between January and February. “There’s a concrete possibility of a strain but also fear of an Achilles tendon problem. We have to be careful about what we say, but it must be said.” Despite the sever...

Image
Paris Saint-Germain are understood to have ended their pursuit of Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, leaving the door open to suitors from the Premier League to get a deal over the line. The Senegal international is widely expected to leave Napoli this summer, and given his status as one of the world's finest defenders, he has attracted plenty of interest from some of the continent's biggest clubs. AC Milan v SSC Napoli - Serie A PSG have long been viewed as one of the favourites to land Koulibaly as they look for a replacement for the ageing Thiago Silva, but Le Parisien state that the French side have pulled out of the race as they do not want to meet  Napoli 's €70m asking price. The report states that Koulibaly is now likely to continue his career in England, where  Manchester United ,  Liverpool ,  Chelsea  and  Newcastle United  are all reported to be pursuing him. The main issue with any move for Koulibaly is the cost of such a deal...

Image
With the Bundesliga back under way and with our brains reprogrammed solely onto German football for the time being, it may be simple for the new fans among us to assume that it's just Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund who have historically dominated the league in recent times. And to be honest, that's often fairly accurate... but  occasionally, an underdog has come along and upset the status quo. It could even happen this campaign with Mönchengladbach and RB Leipzig in hot pursuit of the top two. So who's broken up the usual roll of honour before? Let's take a trip down memory lane. Werder Bremen (2003/04) Werder Bremen Crowned Bundesliga Champions First up, we travel back to 2004. The year everything in football went weird... England crashed out of the Euros because Rooney hurt his foot (other causes are available) and Greece miraculously claimed the title. Meanwhile, Porto confirmed it as year of the underdog with their unlikely Champions League triumph. Bayern Mu...
